Ideas for story structure

Yesterday I went to a Theatre Sports activity class and the guy teaching it said something pretty interesting about how to structure a story which actually helped me out of some writers block I had with a particular story for a little while.

– introduction – you introduce characters, setting, what they have

Eg. Lucy wants to make scrambled eggs, get them out of fridge, uses phone. Gets a juice out.

– problem – they have to face a problem they can’t easily escape

Eg. The eggs and fat set the frypan on fire and there is a huge fire in kitchen.

– new problem that makes the original problem even bigger – we think they won’t escape it

Eg. Tries to escape but the door is locked and The phone has melted.

– solves the problem using materials discussed in the introduction.

Eg. Opens the fridge. Throws the juice on the fire.

That is a little simple but I liked the idea of having two problems and using the material mentioned in the beginning to help resolve the problem/s.
